The research team interviewed some two thousand married individuals, asking for information about when they had their first sexual experiences and when they began having sexual intercourse with their married partners. The results show that one-fifth of respondents felt their marriages were stronger because they waited to have sex. They also reported fewer sexual problems such as premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. They found sex more satisfying within the relationship.

We might be more inclined to take this research seriously were it not for the source. This is a team from Brigham Young University and the focus of their interest was on families in Utah. Not that there’s anything wrong with life in Utah, of course. But generalizing this research to the rest of the country is a bit more difficult. This is not to dismiss any particular conclusions as obviously wrong. For example, the notion that couples who learn how to talk with each other early are less likely to have problems later on. Marriage is more than sex and the sooner couples start learning how to live together as a partnership the better. This includes dealing with problems like erectile dysfunction. In relationships which have been sexual from early on, sex is just the same thing continued before and after the ceremony. There’s nothing special about it. So if something goes wrong, the couples probably take it as a sign the relationship is at an end. Divorce rates remain high.
